Ultimate Pulleys
Originally developed as a component of the equipment kit that accompanies our new Foundations of Physics textbook program, Ultimate Pulleys is a new, exciting, and versatile equipment module that provides a complete lab for rotational dynamics, motion, and principles of machines.
As a machine, four pulleys can be arranged with mechanical advantages of up to 4:1. As a dynamics experiment, students can easily measure angular speed, linear speed, and acceleration using photogates. The spinner (included) allow students to change the moment of inertia while keeping the total mass constant. A notch in the pulley allows students to attach a hanging mass to supply constant torque. Extension and compression springs provide the ability to conduct many experiments including Hooke's Law and mechanical oscillators.
Students can explore many additional concepts including Newton's Laws, force, mass, acceleration, rotational inertia, torque, work, energy, simple machines, conservation of momentum, and mechanical advantage. Ultimate Pulleys is used in conjunction with the CPO Timer II and Physics Stand.
